Welcome to the Office of General Counsel
OFFICE CLOSED FOR IN-PERSON VISITS: In light of the Alameda County Public Health Department's order to shelter in place, the Office of the General Counsel is closed for in-person visits through at least May 1, but will be available by phone and email. We will be checking mail at this location only intermittently. Accordingly, we are accepting--and strongly encouraging--the following documents via email: service of legal documents (including summonses and complaints); Government Code claims; subpoenas; and requests for records. Please send these documents to [email protected]. If you have questions or need assistance, please call 510-879-8535 or 510-879-8265.
The Office of the General Counsel responds to a broad range of legal issues. Our office consists of three attorneys and two support staff. We provide legal counsel and services to OUSD’s governing board, the Superintendent and District departments related to the operation and management of the District.
The mission of the Office of the General Counsel of the Oakland Unified School District is to effectively represent the District, provide advice and counsel designed to achieve ongoing compliance to support the District's mission, and to aggressively protect and advance the interests of the District and the students it exists to serve.
